Professor Daniel Nwachukwu has taken over as the 4th Substantive Vice Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike lkwo, AE-FUNAI Ebonyi State, promising to make staff welfare priority.
His appointment was announced on Saturday, 20th December, 2025, after a painstaking and transparent process that involved over 40 seasoned professors by the University’s governing council.
Nwachukwu, who is a Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology in the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, was elected the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UNEC in 2023.
He said he’s committed to leading with integrity, empathy, and a clear vision for the collective growth of the University.
According to him, “we have challenges ahead, but I believe that with unity, creativity, and determination, we can turn those challenges into opportunities.
Together, we will build the University, embrace innovation, and move the University to greater heights,” he said.
Speaking while handing over to his successor, the outgone Vice Chancellor, Professor Sunday Elom, stated that under his watch the University’s research output has increased significantly, with the academics publishing in top-tier journals and securing grants from local and international funding agencies.
The outgone Vice Chancellor added that the University’s faculties were increased to 14, from 11, departments to 54 from 41 and academics programmes to 64 from 57, while also growing the Students’ population from 9,000 to about 14,000.
