Amidst the political turmoil in Rivers State and the ongoing effort to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Rivers State Governor, has emphasized the pivotal role of his political base in maintaining his political significance.

Channels TV reports that the FCT Minister stated this during a meeting with South-South leaders in his office, while expressing the importance of retaining his political base, noting that without it, his political relevance would be in jeopardy.

He firmly asserted that no amount of criticism or allegations could disrupt his peace of mind; rather, the right course of action must be taken.

He declared, “All of us want to be politically relevant; all of us want to maintain our political structure.”

Addressing the current crisis in Rivers State, Wike acknowledged that internal disputes are commonplace in politics, and he intends to resolve them through the party’s established mechanisms.

“In politics, there are a lot of internal wranglings,” he noted. “But to come out and say ‘Oh they want to do this against me, it will not work.’ I had every power then to say where this thing is going. So, when things are wrong, you ask questions. It is a party affair. The party knows how they resolve their mechanism, it is not an ethnic affair.”

The former Rivers state governor’s comments come at a time when the relationship between him and his successor has become strained, with accusations of his involvement in the impeachment plot.

The situation escalated on Sunday when the Rivers Assembly Complex was engulfed in fire, and gunshots rang out during the removal of principal officers in the Assembly.

Fubara claimed he was shot at by the police, an allegation under investigation.

Both Wike and Fubara belong to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Wike believes that the party’s internal matters will be resolved through its established procedures.

He concluded by highlighting that “Every politician has his interest.”
