The United States Embassy in Nigeria has released a fresh security warning to its citizens, alerting them to a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and US-affiliated schools in the country.
In a security advisory released on March 9, the US mission urged American nationals in Nigeria to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly when visiting US diplomatic premises and institutions linked to the United States.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S. affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the advisory reads.
The embassy specifically warned citizens to take extra precautions when travelling to the US Embassy in Abuja, the US Consulate General in Lagos, and schools affiliated with the United States.
“The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens take additional precautions when traveling to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and U.S. affiliated schools, to include varying times and routes,” the embassy said.
STAY ALERT, AVOID CROWDS
As part of the safety advisory, the embassy urged American nationals to stay aware of their surroundings and avoid predictable routines that could expose them to danger.
Citizens were also encouraged to review personal security plans with family members and maintain a low profile in public spaces.
Other recommended safety measures include staying alert in crowded places, avoiding demonstrations, keeping mobile phones fully charged, and familiarising themselves with emergency exits in buildings.
Despite the warning, the embassy confirmed that the consular sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open.
The mission also urged American citizens to continue monitoring its official website for updates on the evolving security situation.
Additionally, travellers were advised to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely security alerts and assistance if needed.
The latest alert comes days after the United States Embassy in Abuja issued another warning on March 4, advising American citizens of a possible protest in the nation’s capital linked to rising tensions surrounding the ongoing US/Israel-Iran conflict.
