Authorities of Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have renamed the famous Limca Road after the former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.
With the renaming, the strategic Limca Road connecting Awka Old Road, Nkpor Junction, Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway and Obosi-Umuoji Road, among others, will now be known as “Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road.”
Addressing the people during a brief ceremony, held at the popular Nkpor Junction end of the road to officially rename it, on Wednesday, the Chairman, Idemili North LGA, Stanley Nkwoka, said the exercise serves as a reminder of Anyaoku’s selfless contributions to the community and to inspire the youths to strive for greatness.
Nkwoka said the LG embarked on the journey of honouring the former Commonwealth secretary-general to inspire future generations to emulate his values, work ethic, and commitment to excellence.
He noted that the renaming of the road passed through legislative processes at the council, and it was adopted and passed into law.
He said, “We are celebrating Anyaoku today by renaming the Limca Road to ‘Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road’, because he is a great example to society. He is being held in high esteem across the world for his contributions to the community, nation and international affairs.
“Time has passed when we celebrated those with blemished character or those who sprayed money in public spaces. The LG embarked on the journey of honouring the former Commonwealth secretary-general so as to inspire future generations to emulate his values, work ethic, and commitment to excellence.
