An Israeli official has reportedly confirmed that Alireza Tangsiri, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, was killed in a targeted strike in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
According to a report by the Times of Israel, Israeli intelligence sources stated that the strike was carried out late Wednesday night, targeting a military facility believed to be housing key IRGC figures. The official said the “elimination” of Tangsiri marks a significant blow to Iran’s maritime military command structure.
Iranian state media has not yet confirmed the death, but local reports indicated heavy explosions were heard near naval installations in Bandar Abbas, a strategic base along the Persian Gulf. Tangsiri, who had led the IRGC Navy since 2018, was known for his hardline stance against Israel and the United States, frequently issuing warnings about Iran’s readiness to confront hostile forces in the Gulf region.
The reported strike comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, following Israeli claims of intercepting weapons shipments bound for proxies in Lebanon and Yemen. Analysts say Tangsiri’s death, if verified, could escalate hostilities across the region and prompt retaliation from Tehran.
Officials in Tel Aviv have not provided further details about the operation, while international observers are calling for restraint to prevent a wider regional conflict.
