Following the recent decision by the Appeal Court to oust Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the Senate Minority Chief Whip, from the upper legislative chamber, youth from the Abia Central Senatorial District staged a peaceful protest in Umuahia, the state capital, expressing their discontent with the court’s ruling, which they consider a miscarriage of justice.

The appellate court’s verdict on November 4, 2023, disqualified Senator Darlington Nwokocha of the Labour Party due to issues related to the party nomination. As a result, the court declared Col. Austin Akobundu (Rtd) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the February 25 senatorial polls.

The protesting voters have appealed to the Court to reconsider its judgment and ensure that justice is served to the people of Abia Central by upholding Senator Darlington’s victory in the 2023 general elections.

“Judiciary please correct your error by restoring Senator Darlington,” could be seen boldly written on one of the placards displayed by the protesters.

This protest comes shortly after the Labour Party (LP) in Abia state rejected the Appeal Court’s ruling, labeling it a violation of the law.
