“I did my research and realized that doctors perform abortions and prescribe pills for prevention, whereas God wants us to be fruitful. I realized that being a doctor would mean meddling and working against the words of God,” she explained.
Over the past few days, KwaMaphumulo, a faith-based group in Dabangu, has been at the center of controversy in South Africa.
This comes after claims that, in the name of religion, the church, which has more than 100 members, urges members to forgo employment, possessions, educational prospects, and even medical care.
In an interview, a member of the Ikhaya Labafundi faith mission proudly revealed that she turned down a chance to study medicine in Cuba because she preferred to follow Jesus Christ.
Growing up, she had always dreamed of becoming a cardiologist, but that ambition changed as she approached the peak of her academic journey.
“Back in Grade 10, I wanted to specialize in cardiology and everything to do with the human heart,” she said.
The bright student explained that despite going through interviews and being invited to pursue her dream career, she walked away after realizing that studying medicine would go against God’s will.
According to her, people often place their trust in medicine more than in God. Being a doctor, she felt, would lead people to admire her for science rather than for God.
“Jesus healed people, and His disciples healed in His name, meaning there is power in the name of Jesus. As a saved child of God, I am already given authority over spirits,” she added.
“I accepted Jesus Christ as the Saviour and Redeemer of my life in 1986. I am now 53 years old. I am still a believer in Christ and currently at NQF Level 9 qualification, helping people and doing the Lord’s work.
“I had a friend with the same mindset in 2021 during matric… two years later, her perspective changed. She’s now in her third year.”
“I can’t even judge because I was once like this. I still believe, but I’m more open-minded now.”
