The Labour Party (LP) has firmly dismissed any potential merger with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as proposed by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Recall that as reported by MUK TV, Atiku called on opposition parties in the country to join forces together to save Nigeria’s democracy from degenerating into a one-party system.
LP spokesperson Obiora Ifoh clarified in a statement that the party has not engaged in discussions regarding any merger, emphasizing that Atiku’s suggestion was merely a proposal.
“Atiku’s call was only a proposal aimed at making democracy work in Nigeria,” stated Ifoh, highlighting that the response did not mention any purported merger between the LP and PDP.
“There was nowhere in the response that the purported merger between LP and PDP was mentioned,” Ifoh added.
Conversely, the APC criticized Atiku’s merger strategy, asserting that he was grappling with the aftermath of his defeat in the presidential election. APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, urged the PDP to concentrate on resolving its internal party conflicts.
