South African Paralympic icon Oscar Pistorius has been granted early parole, marking his release from prison a decade after the tragic killing of his girlfriend, an incident that captivated global attention, according to prison authorities.
Pistorius received the news of his parole during a hearing held in Pretoria, the city where he has been serving his sentence.
The release date set for his parole is January 5, 2024. Reeva Steenkamp, a model and law graduate, was 29 at the time of her death.
Confirming the parole decision, a spokesman for the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) stated, “The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirms parole placement for Mr Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, effective from 5 January 2024.”
