A 90-year-old widow, Mrs. Comfort Nwanchioma Okwuonu, popularly known as Danchama, is receiving medical care and protection following an alleged series of assaults by members of her younger brother’s family in Umuhie Village, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
According to family members and community sources, the nonagenarian, who is childless and returned to her ancestral home after the death of her husband, allegedly endured years of intimidation, neglect, and physical abuse.
The situation reportedly escalated following a recent attack in which she sustained serious injuries, including machete wounds, prompting renewed calls for justice and protection.
Relatives said several attempts by community leaders and stakeholders to resolve the matter peacefully failed, leading to police intervention.
Confirming the development, the Abia State Police Command disclosed that one suspect has been arrested while efforts are ongoing to apprehend another suspect linked to the alleged assault.
The Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs has also intervened, relocating the elderly woman to a secure care facility where she is receiving medical treatment and support.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Ogechi Becky Oguama, said the victim is responding to treatment and is now safe from further harm, while assuring that the ministry is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the welfare and protection of elderly persons, with residents and human rights advocates calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate sanctions against anyone found culpable.
