The Abia State Government has announced plans to partner with Hilton International to develop a five-star hotel in Umuahia as part of efforts to boost tourism, attract investment, and strengthen the state’s growing economy.
The proposed facility, which will operate under the DoubleTree by Hilton brand, is expected to provide world-class hospitality services and support the increasing influx of investors, development partners, and government officials into the state capital.

Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to excellence and sustainable development during a meeting with a delegation from Hilton International in Umuahia on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
He noted that Abia’s ongoing transformation, rising business activities, and major infrastructure projects such as the Abia Airport and proposed seaport have created a strong demand for premium hospitality services.

According to him, the choice of Hilton reflects the government’s drive for global standards in infrastructure development, adding that the project will further position Abia as a preferred destination for business and leisure.
The Executive Director for Development in Europe, Middle East and Africa at Hilton International, Ms. Nida Sozugecer, described Umuahia as a high-potential market and confirmed that a Letter of Understanding has already been signed between both parties.
She expressed optimism that the partnership would be concluded soon, paving the way for the establishment of DoubleTree by Hilton Umuahia, which is expected to stimulate economic activity and create job opportunities.
The General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, Mr. Kingsley Agomuo, said the state has met about 98 percent of the requirements for the project and expressed confidence that construction will begin soon.
He added that Umuahia’s status as the administrative capital of Abia makes it a strategic location for international hospitality investment.
The proposed hotel project is part of the state government’s broader plan to transform Abia into a modern investment and tourism hub.
