A heavy downpour from Saturday evening into Sunday morning caused severe flooding at the Building Materials Market and several areas in Onitsha, Anambra State, leaving vehicles submerged and disrupting commercial activities.

The floodwaters reportedly inundated large sections of the market, forcing traders and customers to scramble for safety as water entered shops and damaged goods.

Videos circulating on social media showed vehicles partially submerged in floodwater, while traders struggled to salvage their wares from affected shops.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over flooding and drainage challenges in parts of Onitsha, especially during the peak of the rainy season.

Traders affected by the flood have called for urgent intervention to improve drainage infrastructure and prevent recurring losses caused by heavy rainfall.

Although no casualties were reported at the time of filing this report, the extent of property damage is yet to be fully assessed.

Residents and business owners are also urging relevant authorities to implement lasting flood-control measures to protect lives, property, and economic activities in the commercial city.

The flooding comes as many parts of Anambra State continue to experience intense rainfall associated with the ongoing rainy season.
