A Nigerian healthcare worker in the United Kingdom (UK) has been dismissed and deported following an incident where she was observed praying for a terminally ill elderly patient.
The news surfaced through a social media post by a prominent Nigerian doctor, Olufunmilayo.
He emphasized that in the UK, it’s deemed inappropriate for nurses to incorporate religious practices into their professional responsibilities.
According to Olufunmilayo, while it’s not customary for nurses to engage in praying for patients, the protocol mandates involving a religious representative upon a patient’s request for religious services.
He further clarified that the purpose of sharing the incident was to caution Nigerian doctors relocating to the UK against offering prayers to patients.
“Praying for your patient is seen as an abuse of trust and misuse of your position. You are expected to simply do and focus on your job.”
The expectation remains for healthcare professionals to concentrate solely on their duties without blending personal beliefs into patient care.
