The Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has been plunged into deeper crisis following the resignation of several top officials over alleged corruption, financial misconduct, and irregularities in the party’s primaries.
Those who resigned include the Deputy Chairman, Comrade Okey Idenyi; Secretary, Barr. Chinedu Adum; Welfare Officer, Cyril Ajah; Youth Leader, Anthony Nwofe; and other key stakeholders.
Addressing journalists in Abakaliki, the former executives accused the party leadership of corruption, lack of internal democracy, and betrayal of consensus arrangements reached ahead of the primaries.
Comrade Idenyi alleged that the party was infiltrated by external interests and described the primaries as disorganised, insisting that the situation has weakened the party’s structure in the state ahead of the general elections.
He also raised concerns over alleged nomination fees reportedly charged for elective positions, claiming that aspirants were made to pay varying sums before the process was later disrupted by contested primaries.
Other resigning officials echoed similar sentiments, accusing the national leadership of ignoring petitions from the state chapter and failing to address complaints of irregularities and unfair disqualifications.
Barr. Chinedu Adum said he could no longer remain in a party that, according to him, sidelined founding members and failed to uphold due process in its internal elections.
Youth Leader Anthony Nwofe and Welfare Officer Cyril Ajah also confirmed their resignation, citing lack of transparency, internal crisis, and loss of confidence in the party’s leadership.
The development has further intensified concerns over the stability of the NDC in Ebonyi State ahead of the upcoming general elections.
