Fresh political developments in Ebonyi State suggest that efforts by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, to build a broad-based political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections have encountered significant resistance.
According to reports, Umahi’s strategy involved reaching out to leaders of opposition parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), with the aim of securing platforms for some of his preferred candidates following disagreements over ticket allocations within the ruling APC.
The move reportedly became necessary after Governor Francis Nwifuru maintained his position that incumbent federal lawmakers should receive automatic return tickets, limiting opportunities for some aspirants believed to be aligned with the former governor.
Sources indicated that while some of Umahi’s allies sought political opportunities in other parties, attempts to influence candidate selections in key senatorial and House of Representatives contests faced stiff opposition, particularly within the NDC.
The reported resistance affected plans in strategic constituencies, including Ebonyi South and Ebonyi Central Senatorial Districts, where party stakeholders allegedly rejected efforts to alter existing political arrangements.
The development highlights growing political realignments and internal power struggles ahead of the 2027 elections, as major political actors position themselves for future contests within and outside the APC.
Political observers believe the emerging disagreements reflect the intense battle for influence and succession ahead of the next electoral cycle, with Ebonyi expected to remain a key battleground in the Southeast political landscape.
Despite the reported setbacks, political activities and consultations continue across party lines as aspirants and stakeholders prepare for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election season.
