A suspected armed intruder has been arrested by a university’s Joint Security Team in Kogi State after allegedly being found in possession of a pistol inside an examination hall during the institution’s ongoing second-semester examinations.
According to reports, the suspect is not a registered student of the university and was apprehended during a routine security operation on campus.
Security personnel reportedly became suspicious of the individual’s presence in the examination venue and swiftly intervened, leading to his arrest before any disruption or security breach could occur.
Sources within the institution disclosed that the suspect was found with a pistol while inside the examination hall, prompting immediate action by the security team to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The suspect is expected to be handed over to relevant law enforcement authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The incident has sparked concerns over security in tertiary institutions, with students and stakeholders calling for stricter access control measures and enhanced screening around examination centres and other sensitive areas on campus.
Members of the university community have, however, commended the institution’s security personnel for their vigilance and prompt response, which helped avert a potentially dangerous situation.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s presence on campus are ongoing.
