The Anambra State Police Command has rescued a 37-year-old woman, identified as Anurika Nweme, from an angry mob following allegations that she attempted to abduct a newborn baby at a private hospital in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The incident occurred at Divine Mercy Hospital along Eze Iweka Road, Awada, where the suspect was reportedly apprehended after allegedly gaining access to the maternity ward dressed in attire resembling that of a nurse.

According to eyewitness accounts, the woman was seen making video recordings of newborn babies and allegedly placing suspicious phone calls discussing the gender of a baby. Her actions reportedly raised concerns among hospital staff and patients, leading to her interrogation.

The hospital management later confirmed that the woman was not a member of its staff, prompting an alarm that attracted a crowd. Police operatives attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters intervened and rescued her from a mob that attempted to lynch her.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect is currently in protective custody while investigations continue to determine the true circumstances surrounding her presence at the hospital and the allegations against her.

The police also disclosed that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend any possible accomplices linked to the incident.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course while warning against jungle justice.
