Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has urged residents to respect constituted authorities, protect public infrastructure, and embrace responsible citizenship as essential pillars for sustaining the state’s development.

The governor made the call on Sunday at the conclusion of a Holy Mass held at the Government House Chapel in Owerri, where he stressed that good citizenship goes beyond rights and must be reflected in the way people treat public assets.

Uzodimma decried the increasing cases of illegal occupation of government land and the destruction of public infrastructure, describing such actions as a major setback to the state’s growth and development.

“Our attitude is important,” the governor said, emphasizing that residents must cultivate respect for public property and refrain from acts that undermine government investments.

He expressed concern that despite the huge resources committed to building roads and other public facilities, some individuals still engage in vandalism and misuse of government assets.

The governor also called on politicians and residents to place the collective interest of Imo State above personal ambitions, noting that public service should always be driven by the common good.

“For you to be a politician, you must first be a citizen of Nigeria. Separate our common interest from your personal interest,” Uzodimma stated.

He further encouraged those nursing political ambitions to remain patient, trust in God’s timing, and not lose hope if their aspirations are delayed.

Earlier in his homily, the Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Rev. Fr. Gilbert Alaribe, urged Christians to embrace the true meaning of discipleship through sacrifice, generosity, and unwavering faith, stressing that genuine love for God and humanity always comes at a cost.
