At least six buildings have been destroyed and several families displaced following severe gully erosion in Ibolo, Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.
Residents blamed the disaster on poor drainage construction along the Onitsha–Owerri Road, saying the erosion has destroyed homes, farmlands and personal belongings.
One of the victims, Edmond Anazodo, said the erosion rendered his family homeless after swallowing six of his buildings, and appealed to both the state and Federal Governments for urgent intervention.
Reacting to the incident, Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Clem Aguiyi, attributed the erosion to poor engineering decisions and improper diversion of flood channels during the construction of the Onitsha–Owerri Road. He warned that the highway itself could be threatened if urgent remedial measures are not taken.
The Mayor of Ekwusigo LGA, Chimezie Obi, also called for immediate intervention by the state and Federal Governments, stressing that the scale of the disaster is beyond the capacity of the local government and requires urgent action to prevent further loss of lives and property.
