The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly rejected a proposal from the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) seeking an increase in the number of Egyptian clubs allowed to participate in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The proposal was reportedly based on the sustained success of Egyptian clubs in African club competitions, with teams such as Al Ahly, Zamalek and Pyramids FC regularly reaching the latter stages of continental tournaments and winning major honours.

Despite Egypt’s strong record, CAF has decided to maintain the existing qualification structure for the 2026/27 season, meaning there will be no additional continental slots for Egyptian clubs.

Under the current system, the top 12 national associations in CAF’s five-year rankings are each entitled to two places in the CAF Champions League and two places in the CAF Confederation Cup.

All other CAF member associations receive one qualification spot in each competition.

As a result, Egypt will continue to have a maximum of four clubs qualifying through its domestic allocation for CAF’s two major interclub competitions: two in the Champions League and two in the Confederation Cup.
