A chieftain of the Action Peoples Party (APP) and the party’s Imo East Senatorial candidate, Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, has condemned the alleged vandalism of the party’s facilities in Imo State, describing the incident as a threat to democracy and political participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Owerri, Amadi alleged that the APP’s facilities at the Iwuanyanwu Glass House State Secretariat were vandalised, including the destruction of the party’s official signage and other infrastructure.
He described the incident as a politically motivated act of intimidation aimed at suppressing opposition voices and shrinking the democratic space in the state.
Amadi stressed that democracy can only thrive where political parties are allowed to operate freely and citizens can exercise their constitutional rights without fear of harassment or violence.
He argued that acts of intimidation and destruction undermine the rights to freedom of association, expression and political participation guaranteed under the Constitution.
The APP chieftain maintained that no amount of intimidation would deter the people of Imo State from participating in the democratic process or exercising their right to choose leaders of their choice.
He called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged vandalism and ensure that all registered political parties receive equal protection under the law.
Amadi further urged political actors to embrace peaceful competition, respect the rule of law and uphold democratic principles, insisting that credible elections can only be achieved in an atmosphere of tolerance, justice and non-violence.
