The Abia State Government has partnered with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to prepare local entrepreneurs for international markets and strengthen efforts to eliminate counterfeit and substandard products across the state.
Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia.
He said the partnership would enable entrepreneurs to receive training and certification to meet international quality standards, improve the competitiveness of Made in Abia products and enhance export opportunities, particularly for manufacturers in Aba.
Kanu also announced the completion of the Umuomaiukwu Smart School in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, describing it as one of the state’s flagship technology driven schools. The facility is scheduled for inauguration on Wednesday.
On infrastructure, the commissioner said the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has intensified the desilting of drainage channels in flood-prone areas of the state capital to mitigate flooding during the rainy season.
He added that the state government is reviewing the condition of markets within and around Umuahia as part of its urban renewal programme, with Ogwumabiri Market among the facilities under consideration.
Kanu further disclosed that the Ministry of Works carried out road maintenance projects at 46 locations across the state, completing major interventions in Umunneochi, Isuikwuato and Arochukwu Local Government Areas.
He said the government has also commenced rehabilitation of the Opopo Junction, Azumini Obehie federal road and the access road to the Obingwa Local Government Headquarters, stressing that the administration remains committed to improving critical infrastructure regardless of whether the roads are under federal or state jurisdiction.
