The Anambra Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced the dredging and clearing of the Ikenga Waterway in Awka as part of the state government’s efforts to tackle flooding and improve environmental management in the capital city.
The Managing Director of ACTDA, Mr. Ossy Onuko, said the waterway, which drains into the Ezu River through Agu Awka in Awka South Local Government Area, is being reopened to restore the natural flow of stormwater and reduce the recurring incidence of flooding and erosion.
According to him, the project involves the deployment of a swamp buggy to dredge the channel and remove debris and other obstructions hindering effective drainage.
Onuko noted that the intervention is expected to enhance stormwater discharge, minimise erosion, protect lives and property, and safeguard critical public infrastructure, particularly during the rainy season.
He said the initiative reflects the commitment of the Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration to sustainable urban planning, environmental protection, and the development of resilient infrastructure across the Anambra Capital Territory.
