Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu could make an attempt to remain in office for a third term if his health permits and the opportunity arises.
Lawal made the claim during an appearance on The SYMFONI Podcast, where he discussed Nigeria’s democracy, elections and governance.
Speaking on whether Tinubu could seek an extension beyond the constitutionally permitted two terms, the former SGF said he believed the President would pursue such an ambition if circumstances allow.
“But Tinubu will go third term. If God gives him the long life to do it, he will. What will stop him now? Bl+nd Nigerians or a pliant National Assembly of crooks.”
Lawal, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, also took a swipe at Nigeria’s electoral system, accusing political parties of lacking genuine internal democracy during their primaries.
He argued that dissatisfied candidates often turn to the courts after elections, leading to costly legal battles while citizens eventually lose interest in seeking change.
“The candidates will go to the courts and the lawyers will collect billions of naira and impoverish them further. And then that’s the end.”
