Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as Ibee, a 25-year-old graduate of the University of Jos, chef, and aspiring model who was reportedly preparing to compete in Mr and Miss Glam Nigeria 2026, has died after an alleged mob assault in Jos, Plateau State.
According to reports, Ibee, who lived in Rayfield, Jos South, attended a social event on campus on July 26, 2026. Because it became late, he spent the night at a friend’s off-campus apartment in the Ring Road area of Jos North.
The following morning, his friend allegedly accused him of stealing an iPhone, claiming they were the only two people in the room. Ibee reportedly denied the allegation.
Rather than reporting the matter to the police for investigation, a group of youths allegedly assaulted him for hours using sticks, planks, and other objects. Videos circulating online appear to show him pleading for his life while maintaining his innocence.
He was later taken unconscious to Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The Plateau State Police Command has announced the arrest of three suspects—Rinji Daniel Fwanji, Emmanuel Newyear, and Nensemka Fwanji—over alleged culpable homicide. Police say investigations are ongoing and that additional arrests may follow. The Command has also condemned the act of mob justice.
As of the latest official information, there have been no confirmed reports that the missing phone was recovered or that another suspect was identified.
This heartbreaking incident is a painful reminder that allegations are not proof of guilt. Every person deserves due process under the law, and no one should be subjected to violence based on unverified accusations.
May Ibrahim Mbaya rest in peace, and may justice be served through the legal process.
