The Anambra State Government has commenced the desilting of a major blocked drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area, following widespread public concern over persistent flooding and erosion in the community.
The intervention comes days after videos of the blocked drainage and the resulting damage to the Obodoukwu Road, constructed by the state government less than two years ago, circulated on social media.
The drainage serves as a major channel for floodwaters from Nkpor, Awada and neighbouring communities, conveying runoff into the River Niger. Its blockage has been identified as a major cause of flooding and erosion in the area.
Residents said the drainage had remained blocked for over a decade despite repeated appeals for intervention. They also alleged that severe flooding in the area had claimed several lives in recent months and caused extensive damage to homes, roads and other public infrastructure.
Community members attributed the blockage partly to the indiscriminate disposal of refuse by residents and traders into the drainage during rainfall, a practice that has significantly obstructed the free flow of water.
In response, the Anambra State Government has deployed workers and heavy equipment to commence the desilting exercise, with the aim of restoring proper drainage and mitigating the risk of flooding and erosion.
Residents have welcomed the intervention, expressing optimism that the exercise will provide a lasting solution to the environmental challenge and help protect lives and public infrastructure in the community.
