Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another person travelling with him.

The deadly attack occurred on Thursday around 5pm along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.

According to the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, the assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists before fleeing into the forest.

A blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later found abandoned on the highway.

“The driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead in the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the assailants,” the statement said.

Police said Yunusa’s remains were evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while security operatives intensified efforts to locate the abducted victim and arrest those behind the attack.

The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has ordered sustained operations along the affected corridor and directed officers to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The command said it was working with other security agencies to comb the surrounding forests and rescue the abducted victim.
