The academic community of Abia State University, Uturu, has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Professor Godwin Emezue.
Emezue reportedly died after a brief illness, according to a statement issued on behalf of his family by his personal assistant, Austin Chinemerem Okpechi.
The statement described his death as a major loss to his family, the university community, colleagues, students and the wider academic community.
Until his death, Professor Emezue was recognised as a scholar and university administrator who contributed significantly to the academic and institutional development of Abia State University.
As Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, he was described as diligent and committed to maintaining academic standards and strengthening institutional processes.
He also previously served as Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ABSU chapter, where he was known for his advocacy for staff welfare, university autonomy and improved conditions of service.
Beyond his administrative and union responsibilities, Emezue was remembered by colleagues and students as a mentor and teacher whose influence extended beyond the classroom.
The university community and other well-wishers have continued to mourn the academic, with tributes expected to highlight his contributions to the institution and the Nigerian higher education sector.
The family said burial arrangements would be announced in due course.
