Edison Ehie, the representative of Ahoada East and the Speaker of a faction of lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, tendered his resignation, relinquishing both his position as Speaker and membership in the assembly.

Ehie formally communicated his decision to resign in a letter dated 29th December 2023, addressed to Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Although the lawmaker did not explicitly state the reason behind his resignation, speculations suggest it might align with the Abuja peace accord facilitated by President Bola Tinubu.

Expressing gratitude for the privilege to serve, Ehie conveyed in his letter, “This is to inform you of my voluntary resignation as Speaker and member of the 10th River State House of Assembly representing Ahoada East Constituency II with effect from the date of this letter (29th, December 2023).

“I wish to deeply appreciate my colleagues and the people of my Constituency for the rare opportunity to serve and hope to continue to give my utmost best in service to River State subsequently.

“Kindly accept the assurance es of my highest esteem at all times.”

Ehie’s emergence as a factional Speaker occurred during a period of political tension surrounding moves to impeach the governor.

His faction had pledged allegiance to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while another faction stood in support of the immediate past governor, Nyesom Wike.
