The Abia State Police Command has rescued a four day old baby and the infant’s mother while arresting four suspects over alleged conspiracy, child stealing and trafficking.
The suspects, identified as Gladys Nathaniel, Victor Udochukwu, Chijioke Obunwa and Onyeonoro Chinwe, were arrested on September 16, 2026, by operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit and Rapid Response Unit, Obehie.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
According to the police, preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects allegedly conspired to take the four-day-old infant from the mother and subsequently sold the baby to another person.
The command said the arrests followed a diligent investigation by its operatives after the alleged incident was reported.
“The baby and mother were rescued. The mother has been released to her family for proper care and medical attention, while the infant has been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody,” Chinaka said.
The four suspects remain in police custody as investigation continues at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The police spokesperson said the suspects would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
The Abia State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, particularly children, and bringing individuals suspected of involvement in child related crimes to justice through due process.
