The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced flood-control work along Nibo Road in Anambra State following a recent incident in which a school bus was swept away by floodwaters.
The authority has deployed a dredging machine to the affected area as part of efforts to improve water flow and reduce the risk of further flooding along the road.
The intervention is focused on creating a more effective water channel to enable rainwater to flow freely and prevent excessive accumulation on the roadway.
The recent flooding incident raised concerns over the safety of motorists, schoolchildren and other road users, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Following the incident, ACTDA moved equipment to the location and commenced dredging and drainage related work aimed at improving the passage of floodwater.
The exercise is expected to reduce water overflow and minimise disruptions to movement along the road during heavy rainfall.
The development has also renewed attention on the importance of effective drainage systems and sustainable flood-control measures in flood prone areas across the Awka Capital Territory.
