Nigeria suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L encounter at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau.
The hosts took control early, with Franculino Djú opening the scoring in the 15th minute. The forward fired a left-footed effort past Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after Renato Nhaga picked him out inside the box.
Nigeria came close to levelling the score before the break when Alex Iwobi set up Ademola Lookman, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé produced an important save to preserve his side’s lead.
Guinea-Bissau continued to threaten after the restart and doubled their advantage in the 65th minute. Mama Baldé collected a pass from Mamadi Camará on the left before sending a low shot into the Nigerian net.
The Super Eagles made changes in an attempt to turn the game around, with George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika coming on for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi in the 75th minute.
However, Nigeria struggled to find a way back into the contest.
Ilenikhena had an opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 85th minute, but Embadjé again came to Guinea-Bissau’s rescue with another save.
The hosts completed the rout in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló received a through ball from Tamble Monteiro and finished with his right foot to make it 3-0.
The defeat leaves Nigeria with more work to do in their AFCON qualifying campaign after the Super Eagles had opened their Group L campaign with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar.
