Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, has arrived at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja to face intense interrogation regarding an alleged N37 billion fraud.
On Monday morning, Umar-Farouq took to her X handle to announce her presence at the anti-corruption agency’s office, stating, “I have, at my behest, arrived at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to honour the invitation by the anti-graft agency to offer clarifications in respect of some issues that the commission is investigating.”
This development comes after the former minister, who served under for President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration initially failed to respond to the EFCC’s invitation, citing health challenges.
Last week, Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the anti-corruption body, revealed that Umar-Farouq had sent a letter pleading for more time due to indisposition.
Now, Umar-Farouq faces a rigorous inquiry into the alleged laundering of N37,170,855,753.44 during her tenure.
The investigation centers on transactions with contractor James Okwete.
