Anambra State Governor and Visitor to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has approved the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government Academic Staff Union of Universities (FG-ASUU) Agreement for staff of the institution, with implementation scheduled to commence in January 2027.
The approval underscores the state government’s commitment to workers’ welfare and efforts to promote industrial harmony within the university system.
The development was formally communicated to the Vice-Chancellor of COOU, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, by the Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Professor Peter Onwualu, on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
Receiving the communication, Omenugha, on behalf of the university management, Senate, staff and students, expressed appreciation to Governor Soludo for approving the agreement.
She described the governor as a dependable leader who had fulfilled his earlier assurances regarding the matter.
The Vice Chancellor also commended the leadership and members of the university’s labour unions for their understanding and constructive engagement with the university management and governing council.
According to her, the responsible approach adopted by the unions helped secure an amicable resolution without resorting to industrial action that could disrupt academic activities and affect members of the university community.
Omenugha assured the Anambra State Government that the university would respond to the gesture by intensifying efforts to improve academic standards, strengthen institutional performance and position COOU for greater international recognition.
The approval is expected to strengthen relations between the state government and the university community while supporting efforts to maintain a stable academic environment.
The planned implementation from January 2027 will also be significant for affected university staff, as the institution continues to pursue its academic and institutional development goals.
