The Anambra State Government has suspended traditional rulership and town union government elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, directing affected communities to adjust their election schedules in line with new timelines.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by Tony Onyekomelu, Head of Department, Town Union Matters, on behalf of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

According to the statement, the decision was taken in view of political campaigns and the general elections scheduled for January and February 2027.

Under the revised arrangements, communities whose traditional rulership or town union elections fall within December 2026 are advised to reschedule and conduct them on or before November 2026. The statement also directs that handovers should take place on the exact dates the outgoing administrations’ tenures expire.

Communities whose elections fall between January and February 2027 are advised to reschedule them for Easter 2027.

The government urged all affected communities to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance with the revised timelines.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, and all local government area chairmen were also notified of the directive.

The measure is intended to guide the conduct of community leadership elections during the period leading up to the 2027 general elections.
