Google has reported a significant advance in quantum computing, demonstrating a key operation with 99.99% accuracy in a development that could help make quantum computers more dependable and practical.

The achievement addresses a longstanding obstacle in quantum technology: reducing errors during complex calculations. Quantum computers rely on fragile quantum states that can easily be disrupted, making it difficult to maintain the precision required for reliable results.

Google’s research focuses on improving the preparation of special quantum states, called magic states, which are essential for carrying out a broad range of quantum computations. By refining how these states are produced and verified, researchers aim to reduce errors while making more efficient use of computing resources.

The reported accuracy could bring the industry closer to developing fault-tolerant quantum computers, which are designed to perform calculations reliably despite the errors that occur in quantum systems.

If the technique can be expanded successfully, it could eventually contribute to advances in areas such as pharmaceutical research, the development of new materials and the modelling of complex chemical processes.

However, the result does not mean that large-scale, error-free quantum computing has been achieved. Researchers must still address challenges involving scalability, hardware performance and the resources required to execute increasingly demanding calculations.

Google’s reported progress adds to ongoing efforts by technology companies and research institutions to overcome the technical barriers preventing quantum computing from reaching its full potential.
