A coalition of civil society organisations has urged governorship aspirants in Enugu State to avoid inflammatory political statements and focus on issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance made the call during a press conference in Abuja, where it expressed concern over rising political tension in Enugu State following incidents reportedly linked to political activities at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and outside the Enugu State secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

In a presentation read by Comrade Okpanachi Jacob, the coalition questioned reports that governorship candidates Chinyeaka Ohaa of the NDC and Uche Nnaji of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) intended to hold political rallies at the international airport.

The group described the proposed use of the airport for political activities as concerning, citing the need to protect the safety and security of passengers, airport personnel and facilities. It also questioned whether the relevant airport authorities had granted the necessary approval.

The coalition further cautioned opposition politicians against attributing the reported incidents to Governor Peter Mbah without publicly established evidence directly linking him to them.

It stressed that political disagreements should not lead to smear campaigns, misleading allegations or the dissemination of unverified information for electoral advantage.

According to the coalition, candidates seeking the mandate of Enugu residents should present credible and practical policy alternatives in key sectors, including education, healthcare, employment, security, infrastructure, agriculture, investment and economic development.

The group maintained, however, that Governor Mbah was not above criticism, noting that citizens, opposition parties, journalists and public commentators had the democratic right to scrutinise government policies, public expenditure and administrative decisions.

It emphasised that such criticism should be factual and responsible, warning that unsupported allegations and inflammatory rhetoric could deepen divisions and undermine peaceful political participation.

The coalition called on political actors to prioritise constructive engagement, transparency and verifiable information as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the public interest, promoting credible electoral processes and encouraging peaceful political competition.
