Two final-year students of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic tragically lost their lives after a fatal accident involving a truck, just a day before their anticipated final examination.
The victims, Abasifreke Okon and Irene Edwin, both National Diploma students in laboratory science technology, were fatally hit by a truck while riding on a motorcycle along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Highway.
This devastating incident, occurring merely 24 hours before their crucial examination, compelled the institution’s management to postpone the scheduled exams.
Confirming the accident to Premium Times, Gloria Udoudom, the polytechnic’s spokesperson, termed the incident as “tragic,” acknowledging the collision involving the truck and the motorcycle that led to the demise of the two friends and the bike rider.
The police spokesperson in the state, Odiko Macdon, mentioned being unaware of the details regarding the incident when contacted.
The ever-busy Aba-Ikot Ekpene Highway has reportedly been the site of several accidents involving students from the polytechnic, frequently risking their lives as they commute daily from Ikot Ekpene city to Ikot Osura, using commercial motorcycles due to the speed and heavy traffic, particularly from trucks traversing between Akwa Ibom and Abia State.
