The Abia State Government has launched a three day training programme on sustainable waste management aimed at promoting environmental protection, developing practical skills and creating economic opportunities for women and young people across the state.

The programme, organised by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment in collaboration with the Abia State Ministry of Environment, covers the state’s three senatorial districts.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the government representative emphasised the need to view waste management not merely as a sanitation exercise but also as an opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

The speaker noted that waste could be transformed into valuable resources and sources of income when people are equipped with the appropriate knowledge and practical skills.

The organisers were urged to ensure that the training goes beyond theoretical discussions by providing participants with hands on experience and clear guidance on business and employment opportunities across the waste management value chain.

The programme is expected to encourage participants to explore sustainable waste management practices while contributing to a cleaner environment and the development of a green economy in Abia State.

Commendation was also given to the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Professor Ijeoma Iheukwumere, for initiating the programme, which seeks to equip women and young people with the skills and knowledge needed to participate actively in environmental protection.

The initiative underscores the importance of public awareness, skills acquisition and private enterprise in addressing waste management challenges while creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
