Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has disclosed that the first phase of the ongoing reconstruction of Creek Road Market in Port Harcourt will provide approximately 700 stalls and shops for traders currently operating along Creek Road and adjoining streets.

The governor made this known on Friday, October 23, 2026, during an inspection of the project, where he expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work and reaffirmed the target of completing the facility by January 2027.

The reconstructed market is expected to provide traders with a more organised commercial environment while helping to address street trading and traffic congestion in the Old Port Harcourt Township.

According to the project’s stated objectives, relocating traders into the new facility would also create room for road resurfacing, improve traffic movement and support efforts to maintain a cleaner urban environment.

The development is expected to benefit traders, particularly women engaged in commercial activities along Creek Road, by providing designated spaces for their businesses. Residents and commuters could also benefit from improved accessibility and reduced congestion.

The disclosure of the proposed 700-shop capacity offers a clearer indication of the scale of the market’s first phase and its anticipated contribution to commercial activities and urban renewal in Port Harcourt.

With January 2027 set as the completion target, attention will be on the timely delivery of the project and the arrangements for relocating traders into the facility.

The Creek Road Market reconstruction forms part of ongoing efforts to improve trading infrastructure and enhance the urban environment in Rivers State.
