The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has fixed Saturday, November 14, 2026, for the conduct of local government council elections across the state, following the postponement of the earlier scheduled November 7 exercise.
The new date was announced in a press statement dated November 2, 2026, and signed by the Chairman of ISIEC, Chief Charles Ejiogu, JP.
The announcement followed a stakeholders’ meeting held on October 31, 2026, at Rockview Hotels, Owerri, where representatives of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and registered political parties called on the Commission to announce a new election date as soon as possible.
The Commission had earlier postponed the local government elections indefinitely, citing unforeseen circumstances that made the November 7 date unfeasible.
The elections will cover the 27 local government area chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats across Imo State.
According to the statement, the Commission arrived at the new date after consultations with relevant stakeholders and consideration of the need to ensure peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
ISIEC also directed the leadership of registered political parties to visit its headquarters at No. 21 Orlu Road, Owerri, to collect the election timetable and guidelines.
The Commission further informed political parties of its readiness to monitor their respective primary elections for chairmanship and councillorship aspirants in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
Reaffirming its commitment to providing a level playing field for all registered political parties and candidates, ISIEC said it remained determined to ensure the emergence of democratically elected council administrations at the grassroots.
The Commission called on political parties, aspirants and other stakeholders to cooperate towards ensuring a peaceful and successful conduct of the November 14 elections.
