Bernardo Silva has been appointed the new captain of the Portuguese national team following Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international football.
Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed the decision on Friday, November 6, as he announced his squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales.
The 32-year-old Real Madrid midfielder will take over the captain’s armband after Ronaldo announced his international retirement on Thursday, bringing an end to a remarkable career with 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal.
Jesus explained that the captaincy hierarchy is determined primarily by the number of international appearances, making Bernardo the natural successor with 115 caps.
Rúben Dias, João Cancelo, Rúben Neves and Bruno Fernandes will also form part of Portugal’s leadership group.
Speaking about Bernardo’s appointment, Jesus praised his experience and current form, describing him as an important figure who has established himself at one of the world’s leading clubs.
Bernardo now faces the responsibility of leading Portugal into a new chapter following Ronaldo’s departure, with the team looking to maintain its competitiveness and success on the international stage.
The appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Portuguese football after nearly two decades of Ronaldo’s leadership.
