The Rivers State House of Assembly has announced plans to re-screen and re-confirm nine former Commissioners who abruptly resigned from the state executive council, adding a sensational twist to the unfolding political drama.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, on Monday in Port Harcourt, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The list includes prominent figures such as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), and Commissioner for Works, Dr Des George-Kelly, among others.
According to the Clerk, the commissioners are mandated to submit 40 sets of their Curriculum Vitae, along with photocopies and original copies of their credentials for the screening at the State House of Assembly’s Legislative Quarters.
The upheaval traces back to the political turbulence between the Governor of the state, Fubara, and his predecessor, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, leading to a cascade of resignations on Dec 16, 2023.
Notably, the reinstatement of these former commissioners aligns with the peace agreement brokered by President Tinubu, adding a layer of complexity to the unfolding narrative.
The political turmoil escalated to the extent that the state governor sent bulldozers to demolish the state Assembly complex, further fueling tensions.
The resignations of commissioners loyal to Wike followed the peace resolution document released after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and key stakeholders.
The eight-point peace deal, crafted in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, now takes a surprising turn with the re-screening and reconfirmation of the once-resigned commissioners, introducing a new chapter in Rivers State’s political saga.
