Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has declared that there is no turning back on the relocation of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters from Abuja to Lagos.
Describing opposition as “a storm in a teacup,” Keyamo said that the decision is based on operational efficiency rather than physical movement.
Keyamo, speaking on Channels Politics Today, identified the need for a re-designation, stating that the decision-makers are predominantly situated in Lagos.
He addressed challenges faced by FAAN, including staff commuting between Lagos and Abuja due to inadequate accommodation and the lack of digitalization.
Lamenting the agency’s annual expenditure of N450 million on tickets, Keyamo stressed that the relocation to Lagos would address accommodation challenges and enhance operational efficiency.
He expressed commitment to transforming the aviation sector, creating a master plan to make Nigeria the aviation hub of Africa, and collaborating with investors.
Keyamo outlined plans for a special intervention fund, technical committee inauguration, partnership with a Canadian firm for free Wi-Fi in airports, and collaboration with insurance companies to address flight delays and cancellations.
He asserted that no existing concessionary agreements would hinder progress, emphasizing the establishment of a proper national carrier.
