Thai authorities in the Thalang district apprehended two Nigerian men and a Thai woman, Kanyathanat Thotsatham, suspected of running a romance scam.
During a raid in the Phatcharee Thalang housing estate, over 50 sachets of cocaine and a digital balance were seized, leading to the arrest of the trio.
The arrest followed an issued warrant by the Samut Prakan Provincial Court for Kanyathanat on charges of public fraud and falsifying information in a computer system.
Further investigation revealed that the Nigerian men had overstayed their visas by over 1,000 days each.
Authorities uncovered that the scam involved creating fake Facebook profiles to deceive individuals in Thailand into sending money. Kanyathanat’s role was to handle money transfers for a Nigerian gang leader residing abroad.
Upon interrogation, the Nigerian suspects admitted to participating in the romance scam and confessed to selling cocaine to foreign tourists in Phuket to supplement their income.
All three suspects have been transferred to Thalang station for legal proceedings.
