Former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, has attributed Nigeria’s current hardship to the leadership of former President Muhammadu Buhari, shifting the blame away from President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during a virtual religious event on Sunday, the former Central Bank Governor highlighted that Buhari’s administration failed to heed his economic counsel, leading to the country’s economic woes.
Sanusi clarified that while he would criticize Tinubu if necessary, the current economic challenges couldn’t be squarely placed on him, given the legacy of debt inherited by Buhari’s administration.
Acknowledging Tinubu’s imperfections, Sanusi emphasized that in the present economic climate, Tinubu couldn’t be solely blamed.
In his words, “If I am to be fair and just to President Bola Tinubu, he is not to blame for the current hardship; for eight years, we were living a fake lifestyle with huge debt from foreign and domestic debts.
“I can’t join other Nigerians criticising Tinubu on the current economic hardship, and I am not saying he is a saint free from wrongdoing, but in this current economic situation, President Tinubu is not to be blamed.”
He reiterated the necessity of removing fuel subsidies, emphasizing the lack of viable alternatives.
