Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court Abuja, in a landmark ruling, has mandated the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to reopen the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the tragic murder of Dele Giwa, the esteemed founder of Newswatch Magazine, in 1986.
In his judgment, Justice Ekwo stressed that it is imperative for the AGF to uphold justice and accountability, particularly in cases involving violence against media practitioners.
Dele Giwa’s brutal assassination on October 19, 1986, through a letter bomb shook the nation, and now, decades later, the court’s decision reignites the quest for truth and closure.
Beyond Giwa’s case, the court’s directive extends to all journalists slain while carrying out their lawful duties, underscoring the commitment to safeguarding press freedom and ensuring accountability for acts of violence against the media.
Moreover, Justice Ekwo underscored the government’s responsibility to uphold the safety and well-being of journalists, echoing constitutional and international provisions that guarantee their rights to life and freedom of expression.
The ruling stems from a suit filed by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda (MRA), advocating for the enforcement of fundamental rights and the protection of media practitioners, as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution and international human rights charters.
