In the wake of a tragic stampede that claimed seven lives at the Nigeria Customs Service Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos State, the Nigeria Customs Service has taken decisive action, suspending the sale of seized food items to the public.
As earlier reported by MUK TV, it would be recalled that seven persons lost their lives in the stampede that ensued over the rush for the sale of the cheap rice, including a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yaba, Lagos.
Abdullahi Maiwada, a spokesperson for Customs, announced this development in a statement issued on Monday, signaling a temporary halt to the planned disposal of seized food items aimed at alleviating the country’s hardship.
“Considering the recent unfortunate event, we regrettably announce the suspension of this exercise until we establish what transpired on Friday, 23 February 2024,” declared the Nigeria Customs Service.
“This should help us to properly articulate more robust and comprehensive action that will not defeat the noble intention,” the statement concluded, underscoring the service’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
