On Monday, the governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, substantially started the distribution of palliatives, including food and non-food materials to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidies, targeting 1.8 million vulnerable persons in the state.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony held at Muna IDPs camp in Maiduguri, Zulum said that the Borno government started the initial distribution of palliative measures last month while scaling up the exercise to key into the presidential food emergency declaration.
He noted that the initiative was in response to the recent economic hardships necessitated by the removal of subsidies from petroleum products.
He said, “We are doing this food distribution in line with the federal government’s rolled-out palliative meant to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal on vulnerable citizens.
“This administration will prioritize the welfare of the people to ensure that all measures are put in place to alleviate the hardship faced by citizens.”
The governor also urged citizens to give maximum support to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the hardship resulting from the fuel subsidy removal is temporary.
“I want to urge the people of Borno State to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I want you to understand that subsidy is not sustainable; we understand that people will feel the impact adversely at the initial stage, but in the long run, it will be beneficial to all of you,” Zulum said.
