David Aderinokun, a former senatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for Ogun Central Senatorial District, has said the N2 million recently disbursed to each Senator of the 9th Assembly is not a big deal, noting that such an amount is too small as a holiday allowance for a Nigerian senator.
Aderinokun stated this in a post via his verified X page (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
He posted, The $2 million that was given to senators isn’t a big deal. It is even too small for a senator. What can a family man do with 2 million nairas ($2k)? Why are we making it a big deal?
Aderinokun, however, blamed the leadership of the Senate for disclosing the amount, stressing that it showed insensitivity to the sufferings of Nigerians.
“But they shouldn’t have made it public. Making it public is a bit insensitive to the plight of Nigerians,” he added.
MUK TV had reported that Senate President Godwill Akpabio, after the screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, while rounding off the plenary, informed the senators that the Clerk to the National Assembly had sent money into their bank accounts to enjoy their annual holiday.
Akpabio had said, To enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly…
The Senate President was immediately interrupted by senators who were dissatisfied with his public disclosure.
Akpabio thereafter withdrew his statement, replacing it with, “The Senate President has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you in going on a safe journey and returning.”
